About
Charles de Gonzague

Charles de Gonzague creator of the city of Charleville (the city of Charles) born in Paris on May 6, 1580 and died on September 22, 1637 in Mantua.
On May 6, 1606, his 26th birthday, he started work on what would become Charles-Ville. The chosen place is located in its duchy of rethel, about 45 kilometers north of this city, in a loop of the Meuse just in front of the citadel of Mézières.
Almost 35 years of work will be necessary to make it a city worthy of the name. But, from 1608 he made it the capital of his principality of Arches.
